4.2.4 Metagenomics: Success Stories
Among the enormous applications of metagenomics, the most important ones
include the exploration of environmental samples, the gut microbiome, unidentified
microbes, genetic elements, underlying interlinked processes, cleanup of sewage
and solid waste, and the implications of the huge amounts of meta-sequence data
coming from the unseen microbial communities (Handelsman 2004; Bashir et al.
2014; Sebastian et al. 2013; Wang et al. 2016). Metagenomics in combination with
the metatranscriptome and proteome can provide better insight into the soil
