and living cells. The laser light source was a solid state laser at 532 nm and the white light source
was a halogen lamp. Three bandpass filters were added separately to the white light source: filter 1
(527–537 nm), filter 2 (500–550 nm), and filter 3 (350–700 nm). These filters had similar central
wavelengths but increasing bandwidths. Together with white light without a filter, five illumination
conditions were prepared for comparison. a 200 nm polystyrene beads, b 60 nm gold particles, and
c HeLa cells, all immersed in aqueous solution were imaged under the five illumination conditions.
The contrast of the samples increased when the spectral bandwidth decreased, showing that imaging
sensitivity is enhanced using light sources of higher temporal coherence. Reproduced from [31]
