Dr. Mark Speakman is a Tourism academic, Faculty
of Tourism, Autonomous University of Guerrero.
Speakman studied at the University of Central Lancashire in the UK where he gained a BSc in International
Business, followed by a master’s in Science in Tourism
and a PhD in Tourism. As a result of an initiative by
Mexico’s National Council of Science and Technology
(Conacyt), designed to attract foreign academic talent to
Mexican Universities, he joined the postgraduate Sustainable Tourism Management programme at the Autonomous University of Guerrero’s Acapulco campus. His
initial task, along with teaching and administrative
duties, was to conduct a research project that would
seek to gain insight into the underlying causes of
Acapulco’s long-running tourism crisis and to propose
potential methods of resolving the situation in a manner
that would promote the principles of sustainability.
Accordingly, he completed two linked investigations,
one which viewed the situation from a complexity theory perspective (available in a peer-reviewed journal),
while the other, the chapter in this book, utilized the
concept of destination capitals (resources) as its framework. He is the editor of two recently published books
on the topic of sustainable tourism, and his current
research interests focus upon dark tourism, malevolent
tourism, destination evolution, and the tourism history
of Acapulco.
