Coastal Engineering: Theory and Practice
that can rotate in the same direction irrespective of the direction of air
flow is necessary to drive an alternator in order to generate electricity, on
both cycles. Such a turbine is called “Wells turbine”. The working principle of OWC and its intégration with berthing facility is illustrated in
Fig. 5.1 (b). Sundar et al. [2010] presented a comprehensive review on novel
approaches that can utilize the wave energy converters as part of Coastal
defence Systems and breakwaters for the formation of harbours along with
a brief review of OWC around the globe.
Fig. 5.1 (b) Basic vertical breakwater.
Apart from the above stated types, there are spécial types of breakwaters. A type of breakwater introduced as a spécial type would become a
conventional over a period after it becomes quite popular.
Semi-circular breakwaters
It is a semi-circular shaped hollow caisson with fully perforated, founded
on a rubble mound. It is cast as different éléments and made of prestressed concrète. Since the caisson is hollow, its weight and the materials to be used are significantly less. The stability against sliding for
semi-circular breakwater is good, since, the horizontal component of the
wave force is smaller as compared to the vertical component; in addition,
the vertical component is applied downward the curved wall. It enhances
the scenery compared to the conventional rubble mound breakwaters if,
