semi-circular breakwater is used as surface piercing one. According to
Sasajima et al. [1994] this type of breakwater is broadly classified as shown
in Fig. 5.2. These are imperméable, seaside wall perforated, fully perforated and leeside wall perforated. Fully permeable type offers maximum
wave dissipation. This type of breakwater is constructed in Miyazaki Port
in 1993.

Herein, only S-type breakwaters are discussed although an overview on
other types are briefly discussed.
5.3 Criteria for Breakwater Sélection
Amongst the numerous types of breakwater options available for construction at a given site, the significant wave height, Hs and water depth, d are
the most important primary criteria for breakwater type sélection.
Type S
If the topography has good rock and large blocks then the Type S breakwater with or without superstructure or Type C breakwater shah be considered
under following conditions:
H3 < 3 m: Type S without superstructure
Hs > 3 m, d < 20 m: Type S with superstructure
3 m < Hs < 6 m, d > 20 m: Type S with superstructure
Hs > 6 m, d > 20 m: Type S with superstructure or Type C
