also other projects in which offshore wind turbines from Siemens
are used. Many tower éléments are lined up projecting into the
□anish sky while several transport vessels, loaded with blades,
monopiles and tower segments, are berthed at the pier waiting
to départ. Esbjerg has become one of the most important ports
on the North Sea for the offshore wind sector, and has long since
overtaken the more southerly ports including those on German
territory.
No surprise as turbine manufacturer Siemens alone has completely taken over a large part of the port. Siemens is by far the
largest manufacturer of offshore wind turbines, which are ail together still assembled in the Jutland town of Brande.
"We monitor ail activities in the port area of Esbjerg which are relevant to the Butendiekproject", explainsTorben Matthiesen from
the offshore experienced company Most which ensures on behalf
of wpd that ail operations are carried out as scheduled. The temporary office is housed in a container. Several sea charts hang on
the wall giving an overview of the deployment areas. Matthiesen
is a cunning old seaman. He has worked in the offshore business
for more than four décades and among other projects he was involved in the construction of the Great Belt Bridge between Funen
and Zealand. He knows from many years of expérience that there
is no time to be wasted in any phase of a major project of this
nature, especially as by the middle of August 201A the installation process was labouring around one and half weeks behind the
actual schedule.
"Yes, there is time pressure", concédés Matthiesen's younger
colleague, Morten Straarup, "but we live with that ail the time,
it's nothing unusual. However, it is a fact that you can sometimes
become less attentive when pressure is maintained for longer
periods, and that is when mistakes occur which we hâve to deal
with." On the other hand, there are also phases in which progress
isfasterthan planned. For example, one of the 80 monopiles was
installed in the record time of ten hours which created a cushion
of half a day.
