Diverse may be the best word to describe the activities of Mascha Wurst. As well as assignments in project management
and helping with PR, her responsibilities include drawing up the
waste management and consumables plan and the subject of
customs: this is no problem for the graduate in environmental
science, who, after spending some years in polar and marine research, applied at wpd and was promptly accepted. "wpd is like
paradise", says the project coordinator, grinning. She enjoys the
performance-based working environment where she can operate
independently.
She only has good things to say about the Danish authorities with whom she has many dealings over customs matters.
"The EU customs area extends to the 12 nautical mile zone.
However, ail goods which are taken beyond that on the high seas
to the wind farm, such as our materials for Butendiek, must be
reported to the customs authorities. For example, as well as major components, spare parts or consumables hâve to be declared
to customs before shipping and export applications submitted",
explains Wurst, "even small parts such as compact solar lanterns
fortemporary navigation lights on the construction site. Two of
them failed on transition pièces already erected and they had to
be replaced with new ones."
While small spare parts and the crews départ from the soberly
quiet port of Havneby, transition pièces, tower segments, rotor
blades and nacelles are shipped with spécial purpose vessels
from the much larger port in Esbjerg on the mainland of Jutland. There is lively activity on newly constructed jetties. Because
not only the Butendiek offshore project is supplied from here but
