Total Suspended matter
Fig. 3. Vertical profiles and average value of photic and aphotic layers of total, microparticulate and picoparticulate matter (TSM) in Terra Nova Bay (BTN) and southwestern and
southeastern régions of the Ross Sea
we found average concentrations of 0.3 mg T1 in the Southwest and southeast Ross
Sea and 0.7 mg l'1 in Terra Nova Bay. The microparticulate accounted for the
majority of the total suspended matter (from 63 to 85 % of TSM in the photic
layer and from 51 to 65% in the aphotic layer). Vertical patterns of total particulate matter and pico- and microparticulate matter in Terra Nova Bay and in the
open Ross Sea are illustrated in Fig. 3.
3.3 Protein Content
Proteins were the dominant class of organic compounds. The average concentration of total particulate proteins was 109, 286 and 275 pg l'1 in the photic layer of
the southeastern, southwestern and Terra Nova Bay areas respectively and ranged
between 10.7 and 730.3 pg T1. Protein content in the picoparticulate fraction
accounted for from 11 to 40% of the total protein content of the samples. Protein
content typically declined with depth both for the pico- and microparticulate
tractions. Vertical distributions of total proteins, and protein content of the two
size classes, are shown in Fig. 4.
3.4 Carbohydrate Content
Carbohydrates were the second most important class of organic compounds, with
