Fig. 15. Potential température (°C) in vertical section along 132.5°W occupied by the R/V
“Professor Zubov”. Station 89 (23 February 1986), stations 1-21 (13-18 January 1986)
meander) is found farther to the south, with the SF at its Southern side near 60.5 °S.
Doming of the isotherms south of the feature indicates the outflowing northern
branch of the gyre with the total transport of 8 Sv relative to the bottom. The
132.5°W section (Fig. 15) crosses the APF core of the ACC near 60 °S, with the
front being not so pronounced as on the previous section, probably due to the
oblique angle of the section relative to the front. The intégral transport amounts
to 37.4 Sv. The northern ACC core associated with the Subantarctic Front is found
between stations 44 and 46, with the intégral transport of 44 Sv. The SF is implied
near 64 °S, with the associated intégral transport of 7.2 Sv relative to 3000 m. The
lowest CDW température (1.75°C at 66 °S) is 0.3 °C higher than the lowest température at 140°W (1.45 °C at 61.5 °S), thus indicating the virtual absence of the
deep water typical of the interior of the gyre. Both sections suggest that the eastern boundary of the Ross Gyre is determined by the ACC Crossing the Pacific
Antarctic ridge, as noted earlier by Read et al. [31].
The easternmost océanographie section within the inflow area available to us
was occupied by the Russian R/V “Mihail Somov” along 150°W (Fig. 16). Nansen
hydrographie casts were obtained between 26 July and 11 August 1985, thus being
probably the only winter time measurements within the Ross Gyre [12] (station
