Fig. 9. Annual mean property distributions on the vertical section along 150°W obtained
by optimal interpolation of profile data on neutral surfaces
is a signal of the inflowing silica-rich deep-water from the south-east Pacific,
whereas the near-bottom maximum is due to a newly formed bottom water.
Property distribution at a number of selected neutral surfaces [28] is used to illuminate the circulation and thermohaline structure of the Ross Gyre within characteristic wàter masses.
5.1 Neutral Density yn=27.90 (Fig. 10a)
The isopycnal surface of y"=27.90 coincides with the lower boundary of AASW,
which typically occupies the layer up to 500 meters thick near the APF and up to
100 m in the center of the gyre. The property fields exhibit wide ranges in water
mass characteristics. A zone of intense température, salinity and oxygen gradients
extends over the crest of the mid-ocean ridge, delineating a sharp boundary
between the ACC and Ross Gyre. This boundary curves abruptly southward near
145°W, with property isolines exhibiting a 12-degree latitudinal shift. The influence of the cold, fresh and highly oxygenated shelf waters is apparent in the interior of the gyre. Extrême values are observed near 70°S in the center of a tongue
between 170 and/at 160°W (<-1.4 °C, S<34.35,02>6.6 ml/1, SiO2<60 pmol/kg).
