This sponge family is not yet sufficiently documented, and work is in
progress to study additional genera.
Surprisingly, Hymeniacidon perleve, classified within the Halichondriidae,
does not possess these 24-branched sterols, but appears to be somewhat
close to the Suberitidae sponges since it contains 73% of stanols (Erdman & Thomson, 1972). A comparative early study of free amino-acid
patterns (Bergquist & Hartman, 1969) showed that the Hymeniacidonidae showed greater affinity with the Hadromerida than the Halichondriidae. Thus, further biological and chemical studies are required
to elucidate the situation for Hymmiacidon sponges.
Acknowledgments
We are grateful to A. Samb for the assistance of the Laboratoire des Produits Naturels, Faculté des Sciences, Dakar, Senegal, and H. Al Ali, Océanium de Dakar, for
organizing the dives and the collection of several sponges. Several students were
associated with this work: L. Boulard, R. Ganachaud, S. Markai, H. Miche.
