Marine lipids
Studies of these selective retention mechanisms during gametogenesis
and larval development demonstrated specific events in the composition
of the PI. classes, opening a possible way to characterize essential fatty
acid requirements for these two important biological phases. Unknown
regulatory functions of some phospholipid classes are also suggested.
Differences between the two species were also observed: non-methyleneinterrupted fatty acids (NMI) were mainly localized in plasmalogen
fraction in oysters, but were not identified in scallops. On the contrary,
scallops demonstrated a special 22 :4 (n-9) fatty acid that was localized
mainly in PS and plasmalogens. Question of their biological function
is opened.
