Marine lipids
ethyl ester of eicosapentaenoic acid (HPA group) or docosahexaenoic
acid (DHA group) but contained the same amount of (n-6) fatty acids.
The EPA and DHA diets contained each one an amount of purified
fatty acids comparable to that present in MaxEPA diet. To focus on the
effects of (n-3) fatty acids, the concentrations of oleic acid, cholesterol
and a-tocopherol were kept similar in all diets (see the table).

Platelets were prepared from blood withdrawn from the abdominal
aorta into acid-citrate-dextrose anticoagulant (Cazenave et al., 1983).
Platelet cholesterol and phospholipids were analysed as described previously (Andriamampandry et al., 1996). Thromboxane A 2 formation
was measured from its stable hydrolyzed product, thromboxane B
2
(Elisa kit, Cascade Biochem, Berkshire, UK) found in a suspension of
platelets activated by collagen or thrombin. Platelet aggregation was
quantified with an aggregometer using different concentrations of ADP,
collagen or thrombin as agonists. The extent of the aggregation was
evaluated as the velocity and as the maximum amplitude of the photometric response.
Plasma triglycerides and total and free cholesterols were determined with
enzymatic kits (Boehringer Mannheim).
Coagulation factors were measured according to reliable biological
procedures. Fibrinogen, activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT),
prothrombin time (PT) and coagulation factors (FIIc, FVc and FVII-Xc)
were determined using a STA-coagulometer (Stago Diagnostica) (Andriamampandry et al., 1998).
