Organized by the Institut français de recherche pour l’exploitation de la
mer (Ifremer) in collaboration with the Laboratoire d’analyses des prélèvements hydrobiologiques (Laphy) of Biarritz, the Seventh International
Symposium brought together in Biarritz (France), approximately 200 participants from various European countries from April 4 to April 6, 2000.
These proceedings gather more than sixty major contributions covering
a wide span of fields, highlighting the diversity and the vitality of
scientific research on this large study area which the bay of Biscay
constitutes.
The presentation of the contributions is similar to that of the oral communications carried out at the time of the conference. A first part of the
work approaches the marine environment itself under these various aspects: phvsical oceanography, benthologv, planctonology and fishery
sciences. The second part is devoted to the lagoon and estuarial areas
treated within the framework of various sets of scientific themes: hydrogeology, nature and action of pollutants and biology.
The results presented here will doubtless contribute to improving our
knowledge on the operation of the various ecosystems of the bay from
littoral areas strongly disturbed by the human uses to the deaper zones
theoretically less sensitive to the disturbances of the adjacent catchment
areas. We hope that they will help the managers with better
understanding the brittleness of these areas and the resources which they
produce in order to avoid irreversible degradations and to ensure the
durability of their exploitations.
The texts are presented in various languages, French, Spanish and English
so as to also show that the diversity' of the language does not constitute,
quite to the contrary, a barrier to the desire to collaborate and to
exchange knowledgp within this community of researchers.
We make a point here of thanking the various financial partners who
trusted us and made the realisation of this conference possible: the City of
Biarritz and its Musée de la Mer, the Agence de lEau Adour-Garonne, the
Conseil général des Pyrénées-Adantiques, the Conseil régional
d’Aquitaine, the Edf Aquitaine Company and the Chambre de Commerce et d’Industrie de Bayonne-Pays basque.
