versants adjacents.

Introduction
The study of the bay of Biscay represents a major stake for the
improvement of our scientific knowledge on the marine environment
and for the economic and social implications of this research. This
maritime and littoral space constitutes a field of multidisciplinary
scientific research more and more common to many bordering
countries. Moreover, it makes an essential component of the Atlantic
Arc European Area where a diversitv of uses develops whose social and
economic importance constitutes one of the major characteristics of the
inheritance of maritime Europe.
Organized for the first time in 1988 at the University of Oviedo (Spain),
this scientific meeting gathered at the beginning only a few tens of
researchers. In 1990, it was decided that this sjmposium, still informal,
would take the name of “Intemational Symposium on Oceanography of
the bay of Biscay” and that it would be organized evety two years
alternatively in France and Spain. Oviedo (1988), Saint-Sebastien (1990),
Arcachon (1992), Santander (1994), La Rochelle (1996), then again SaintSebastien (1998) accommodated, in turn, this international meeting.
Considering the growing interest of the scientific world for this multidisciplinary approach of the bay of Biscay on various scales, the Côte
Basque, and Biarritz in particular taking into account its littoral geographical position and its intemational fame, were to accommodate, with
the dawn of the third millenium, this Seventh International Svmposium
on Oceanography of the bay of Biscay.
