The Macquarie Island Gentoo is in some respects intermediate between
Northern and Southern Gentoos, although probably a separate subspecies; the affinities of Gentoos breeding on Marion, Kerguelen, Crozet
and Heard Island are undetermined (Stonehouse, in press).

Genus Aptenodytes (Fig. 5)
King penguins breed as neighbours of Geiitoos on Macquarie, Marion,
Kerguelen and Crozet, Heard, South Georgia and the northern islands
of the South Sandwich group. During the past two centuries they appear
to have been exterminated by man from Tierra del Fuego, the Falklaiid
Islands, and the South Shetlaiids. Emperor penguins breed on the coast
of continental Antarctica, between 66"s in Wilkes Land (Eastern
Antarctica) and 77% on the Ross Sea coast.
