penguins breed on islands off the coast of south-western Australia, on
Tasmania and islands in the Bass Strait, and on the mainland coast
northward to Sydney. In New Zealand they are restricted to the North
Island and the northern tip of the South Island. Southern Blue penguins
are restricted to cooler water at the southern end of New Zealand,
breeding in Otago, Southland, the Fjordland area and southern parts of
