H. viridis. This species is normally hermaphroditic and can be maintained
in a sexual stage all year long at 19°C. Testicular swellings are formed in
the anterior part of the body column, while ovarian patches appear in its
lower part. Thus in the course of a gametogenic cycle the body includes at
the same time three superimposed zones: an anterior male zone, an intermediate female zone, and a blastogenic zone at the base of the body column,
at the level of the basal disc (see Fig. 1). As the polyp grows continuously
