FIG. 7. Catheptic activity in regenerating tails under the influence of E 9 (v. Hahn
and Lehmann, 1958). The catheptic activity is very high (c/. Fig. 6). Even the catheptic
activity of the stumps is increased and that of the tails of non-amputated animal is
also high, φ = regenerate, Q= stump, O = non-amputated but treated with E 9 , O not
treated and not amputated. Abscissa: time in days.
In contrast to the effect of E 9 colchicine did not produce significant
modifications of catheptic activity in any of the tissue pieces tested
(Fig. 8). Colchicine exerts very strong morphostatic actions but in our
experiments at least it did not show marked effects upon the proteases.
The mechanism of action of colchicine seems to differ essentially from
that of E 9 . The great difference in chemical constitution of the two
compounds had already suggested that biologically these two comthan 100% compared to the non-treated controls, shows that E 9 has
an influence on protease activation even when there is no inhibition of
regeneration. Furthermore the course of the activity curve of the
regenerates differs strongly from the normal curve, its activity peak
appearing much later than in the controls, namely only on the 12th to
the 13th day after amputation (Fig. 7).
