VITELLINE MEMBRANE AND CORTICAL PARTICLES 253
FIG. 21. Oocyte of Paracentrotus lividus—germ of cortical particle in which the
lamellar vacuoles begin to line up. X 52,000.
plate of the lamella, as shown in Fig. 14, may reflect an earlier polyribosome mediated protein synthesis in these regions of the particle.
In Strongylocentrotus
purpuratus the differentiation of the distal region
of the lamella with its filaments and connections may be a process of
rearrangement and ordering similar to that occurring in
Psammechinus
and
Paracentrotus.
8. Translocation
of the Cortical Particles at
Maturation
The migration of the cortical particles to the surface of maturing eggs
is a remarkable although not unique phenomenon. Considerable rearrangements in the cytoplasm are known from other material, e.g.,
ascidians (see Reverberi, 1961). Runnström suggested (1963a,b) that
these rearrangements reflect phase separation and changes in partition of
substances or particles between phases in a way comparable to the phase
and partition systems described by Albertsson (1961). These are extremely sensitive to additions of new substances such as occurs at
