VITELLINE MEMBRANE AND CORTICAL PARTICLES 251
FIG. 19. Oocyte of Paracentrotus lividus—two adjacent germs of cortical particles.
Rough endoplasmic vesicles surround the central lamellar rudiment. X 55,000.
Within the plate, granules of somewhat higher density are seen which,
however, are pale compared with a row of denser granules at one side of
the plate (oblique arrows). These are similar to the ribosomes that
are found in the endoplasmic membrane in close vicinity to the particle
rudiment (vertical arrow).
Figure 21 shows a more developed basal plate where the vacuoles
250 Â in diameter are present in greater number and an arrangement of
filaments begins to reveal itself by a concentration of material along
single rows of the vacuoles.
The basal region is a remainder of the early rudiment of the lamella.
