When representative values are here adopted for K,. and q,. then E can be
estimated. It is found that I: is of the order of 10-'--10-' cm2 s - 3. This is
quite similar to the results obtained by Stewart and Grant (1962).
5. RESULTS A N D DISCUSION
By the use of the airborne line scanning system of infrared radiation, the
surface temperature of the thermally polluted sea was observed, saving manpower and time. Results obtained from an analysis of the data can be summarized as follows:
( I ) The lateral distribution of temperature can be expressed by the Gaussian function though it is not symmetrical with respect to the center line; its
nondimcnsional form agrees with the Gaussian distribution.
(2) The temperature along the center line near the source seems to
docreasc linearly with distance, but after some distance (beyond 500 m. say.
from the source) it is likely to become inversely proportional to the distance.
(3) The diffusion coefficient is estimated to beof the order of lo5 cmZ s - ' ,
based on the relationship with the downstream gradient of lateral variance
of the spread. The dissipation rate of turbulent energy is also estimated to be
of the order of 10-'-10-2 cm2 s - ~ .
