I n the present study, an airborne infrared radiometer was used for measuring the surface temperature of the sea. We have here some problems to
consider. Emissivity of the sea surface and attenuation of infrared radiation
during passage through the air will affect the readings of the radiometer. For
instance. the infrared imagery of the sea surface polluted with pulp sewage
from a factory is quite different from one not polluted, even though the
temperature is not so different between them (see Ochiai, 1973). In the
present experiment, therefore, the sea-surface temperature was directly
measured at several points. In addition, attention was paid so that reflection
of the sunshine would not spoil the readings.
The diffusion of thermal pollution is more or less affected by air temperature, wind velocity, depth of the sea, current velocity, exhaust velocity of the
pollution, and other factors. However, since these were measured at only a
few points in the present study, the data are not enough for analysis. This is a
problem to be solved in the future.
Lastly, it should be pointed out that the plume of thermal pollution here
studied is “instantaneous,” and the diffusion coefficient obtained from it
may be different from that averaged for some time (e.g., Ito, 1972).
