Nous présentons aujourd’hui le Tome III de : « Catalogue des Poissons des Côtes Algériennes » (1). Une entreprise de longue haleine trouve ici son terme. L’ouvrage est loin de nous satisfaire. Les diagnoses sont restées très sommaires, mais nous avons tenté de les rédiger de telle sorte qu’elles renferment l’essentiel. Certaines espèces signalées autrefois dans nos eaux, ou bien n’ont pas été retrouvées, ou bien avaient été l’objet de déterminations erronées.
Nous avons surtout basé notre travail sur ce que nous avons recueilli nous-mêmes et placé dans nos collections.
Nous avons tenté d’être aussi clairs que possible, en supprimant un luxe de détails afin de rendre cet ouvrage utile, tout en étant facile à consulter.

Environmental toxicology and chemistry of oxygen species
The handbook of environmental chemistry
The book describes the chemical structure and spectroscopic properties of toxic oxygen species such as: super-oxide, hydroxyl and organic oxygen radicals, hydrogen peroxide and singlet oxygen. With respect to these oxygen species this volume also covers sources of generation; methods of identification; the chemical reactivity with biologically important compounds; biochemical, clinical and environmental aspects of the oxygen species formation. Emphasis is placed on photodynamic effects, possible role of oxygen species in human diseases, in smog and acid rain formation, in degradation of polymers and plant senescence processes. The book also includes cell and tissue mechanisms of protection against damage caused by oxygen species.

The book emerges from my work at the Ulster Polytechnic/University of Ulster, where I met and worked with various characters and personalities and I would like to mention Lesley Hawe, the late Archie Holmes, Myrtle Young who epitomise for me the constant kindness, help and support I received from the academic, technical and secretarial staff over the years.
The book incorporates material taken from various sources, including my lecture notes, research outcomes of my postgraduate students, some of them have become friends for life, and some excellent text books, research papers/news, industry/company/organisation literature and web material that we are so fortunate to have access to. The sources of the materials used are gratefully acknowledged and are listed as references, however, over the years material permeates into teaching notes that is not always possible to trace the references for. I apologise, therefore, for any such material that has no accompanying reference and I express my thanks and gratitude to the people concerned.

Most of the solid substances are crystalline in nature. For example, all the metallic elements like iron, copper and silver; non – metallic elements like sulphur, phosphorus and iodine and compounds like sodium chloride, zinc sulphide and naphthalene form crystalline solids. Crystalline solids can be classified on the basis of nature of intermolecular forces operating in them into four categories viz., molecular, ionic, metallic and covalent solids. Let us now learn about these categories.
