This book addresses the question of how system software should be designed to account for faults, and which fault tolerance features it should provide for highest reliability. With this second edition of Software Design for Resilient Computer Systems the book is thoroughly updated to contain the newest advice regarding software resilience. With additional chapters on computer system performance and system resilience, as well as online resources, the new edition is ideal for researchers and industry professionals. The authors first show how the system software interacts with the hardware to tolerate faults. They analyze and further develop the theory of fault tolerance to understand the different ways to increase the reliability of a system, with special attention on the role of system software in this process. They further develop the general algorithm of fault tolerance (GAFT) with its three main processes: hardware checking, preparation for recovery, and the recovery procedure. For each of the three processes, they analyze the requirements and properties theoretically and give possible implementation scenarios and system software support required. Based on the theoretical results, the authors derive an Oberon-based programming language with direct support of the three processes of GAFT. In the last part of this book, they introduce a simulator, using it as a proof of concept implementation of a novel fault tolerant processor architecture (ERRIC) and its newly developed runtime system feature-wise and performance-wise. Due to the wide reaching nature of the content, this book applies to a host of industries and research areas, including military, aviation, intensive health care, industrial control, and space exploration.

This book describes current understandings and recent progress into a varied group of natural products. In the first chapter the role that total synthesis may play in revising the structures proposed for decanolides, which are ten-membered lactones found primarily in fungi, frogs, and termites is presented. The following chapter presents the development of the intriguing plant-derived sesquiterpene lactone, thapsigargin, a potent inhibitor of the enzyme, SERCA (sarco-endoplasmic Ca2+ ATPase), which has potential as a lead compound to treat cancer. The third chapter covers the potential of various plant phenolic compounds for treating the tropical and sub-tropical infectious disease, leishmaniasis. In addition the volume presents recent advances related to the plant alkaloid, cryptolepine, which is of particular interest as a lead for the treatment of malaria, trypanosomiasis, and cancer.

This ebook makes learning "complex" numbers easy through an interactive, fun and personalized approach. Features include: live YouTube video streams and closed captions that translate to 90 languages!
Complex numbers "break all the rules" of traditional mathematics by allowing us to take a square root of a negative number. This "radical" approach has fundamentally changed the capabilities of science and engineering to enhance our world through such applications as: signal processing, control theory, electromagnetism, fluid dynamics, quantum mechanics, cartography, and vibration analysis. A particularly beautiful connection between art and complex numbers lies in fractals, such as the Mandelbrot set.

In an expanding world with limited resources, optimization and uncertainty quantification have become a necessity when handling complex systems and processes. This book provides the foundational material necessary for those who wish to embark on advanced research at the limits of computability, collecting together lecture material from leading experts across the topics of optimization, uncertainty quantification and aerospace engineering. The aerospace sector in particular has stringent performance requirements on highly complex systems, for which solutions are expected to be optimal and reliable at the same time. The text covers a wide range of techniques and methods, from polynomial chaos expansions for uncertainty quantification to Bayesian and Imprecise Probability theories, and from Markov chains to surrogate models based on Gaussian processes. The book will serve as a valuable tool for practitioners, researchers and PhD students.

This book provides detailed information on the electrochemistry of technetium compounds. After a brief physico-chemical characterization of this element, it presents the comparative chemistry of technetium, manganese and rhenium. Particular attention is paid to the stability, disproportionation, comproportionation, hydrolysis and polymerization reactions of technetium ions and their influence on the observed redox systems. The electrochemical properties of both inorganic as well as organic technetium species in aqueous and non-aqueous solutions are also discussed. The respective chapters cover the whole spectrum of topics related to the application of technetium in nuclear medicine, electrochemistry of technetium in spent nuclear fuel (including corrosion properties of technetium alloys), and detecting trace amounts of technetium with the aid of electrochemical methods. Providing readers with information not easily obtained in any other single source, the book will appeal to researchers working in nuclear chemistry, nuclear medicine or the nuclear industry. This workbook is designed to be used in conjunction with the author's free online video tutorials. Inside this workbook each chapter is divided into learning modules (subsections), each having its own dedicated video tutorial. View the online video via the hyperlink located at the top of the page of each learning module, with workbook and paper / tablet at the ready. Or click on the Engineering Mathematics YouTube Workbook playlist where all the videos for the workbook are located in chronological order: Engineering Mathematics YouTube Workbook Playlist http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL13760D87FA88691D [YTPL]. While watching each video, fill in the spaces provided after each example in the workbook and annotate to the associated text. You can also access the above via the author's YouTube channel Dr Chris Tisdell's YouTube Channel http://www.youtube.com/DrChris Tisdell The delivery method for each learning module in the workbook is as follows: Briefly motivate the topic under consideration; Carefully discuss a concrete example; Mention how the ideas generalize; Provide a few exercises (with answers) for the reader to try. Incorporating YouTube as an educational tool means enhanced eLearning benefits, for example, the student can easily control the delivery of learning by pausing, rewinding (or fast-forwarding) the video as needed. The subject material is based on the author's lectures to engineering students at UNSW, Sydney. The style is informal. It is anticipated that most readers will use this workbook as a revision tool and have their own set of problems to solve this is one reason why the number of exercises herein are limited. Two semesters of calculus is an essential prerequisite for anyone using this workbook.
Tetrad formalism for exact cosmological observables

This book presents a novel mathematical formalism, based on the tetrad formulation of differential geometry, for describing cosmological observables exactly and conveniently. It covers all the standard observables, i.e. distances, weak lensing, number counts and cosmic microwave background, and also includes a detailed derivation of general-relativistic matrix kinetic theory. All the fully nonlinear equations are derived in detail and the mathematical content is self-contained, so that readers require only a basic knowledge of general relativity. Moreover, the authors discuss several subtle issues that are usually overlooked in the literature and, in particular, issues that distinguish this formalism from the more approximative standard practice.

This open access book is a unique compilation of experimental benchmark analyses of the accelerator-driven system (ADS) at the Kyoto University Critical Assembly (KUCA) on the most recent advances in the development of computational methods. It is devoted especially to nuclear engineers and scientists. Readers will find a detailed description of advanced measurement techniques and calculation methodologies for the ADS with 14 MeV neutrons and high-energy neutrons (with combined use of 100 MeV protons and Pb-Bi target) at KUCA. Additionally, experimental results of nuclear transmutation of minor actinides by ADS and at a critical state are included. Readers also have access to benchmarks of specific ADS experiments with raw data in the Appendix. The book is a valuable resource for the ADS experiments at KUCA which are globally recognized as both static and kinetic studies from the point of view of fundamental research.
