Among the roughly 30,000 species of fish, migratory species account for only 165 species, but most of them are ve"rv important fisheries resources. Moreover they are an interesting subject of study as they have special biological characteristics and, also, interesting life histories. Migratory fishes move either alone or in schools from their birth place to the growth habitats, and then usually return back to the original birth place for reproduction. These migrations allow fishes not only to exploit different food availabilities and to adapt to environmental changes, but also to regulate population density and widen their distribution. There are many mysteries regarding the physiology and ecology of fish migration.
This book presents up-to-date innovative research results on the physiology and ecology of fish migration. It focuses on salmon, eels, lampreys, and bluefin tuna. The book examines migratory behavior, spawning, and behavioral ecology.
