This is Part – III of the book: “Basic Thermodynamics: Software Solutions”.
Here, Second Law of Thermodynamics and Entropy are dealt with.
After explaining the concepts of Thermal reservoir, Heat Engine, Refrigerator and Heat Pump and their efficiency / coefficient of performance (COP) , two important statements of II Law, viz. Kelvin – Plank statement and Clausius statement are given. Carnot cycle, its efficiency etc are explained next.
Entropy, being an ‘abstract’ concept, is better studied by seeing how it is applied in the analysis of commonly encountered processes.
We study entropy changes for various processes involving pure substances, incompressible substances and ideal gases.
Entropy principle is used to analyze some practically important cases.
‘Entropy balance’ for various systems is studied.
Above topics are illustrated by solving several problems using Mathcad, EES and TEST software.

This book contains Solutions to Problems in Basic Thermodynamics, as per the syllabus of B.E. courses in Visweswaraya Technological University (VTU), Karnataka, India (and other Universities as well).
In this book, problems are solved using three popular software, viz. “Mathcad”, “Engineering Equation Solver (EES)” and “The Expert System on Thermodynamics (TEST)”. Some ‘free software’ are also explained.
An introductory chapter gives a brief overview of the software used.
The book is presented in four Parts, and this is Part-I:
Part-I contains an Introduction to software used, information and worked-out problems on the topics of Units, Pressure, Temperature, and examples of extensive use of software to find properties of Pure substances and to perform related calculations.

his is Part – IV of the book: “Basic Thermodynamics: Software Solutions”.
Here, Availability or ‘Exergy’, Irreversibility and Second Law analysis of systems are dealt with.
Several useful EES Functions are written for Exergy under various conditions and for closed systems and when there is a mass flow, for Ideal gases as well as real fluids. EES Functions are also written for entropy changes for various processes. Use of these Functions in problem solving is demonstrated.
Exergy balance and II Law analysis of systems is explained.
Above topics are illustrated by solving several problems using Mathcad, EES and TEST software.

This is Part-II of the four-part e-book “Software Solutions to Problems in Basic Thermodynamics”
Part-II contains solved problems on following topics: Zeroth Law, Heat and Work, First Law of Thermodynamics for a closed system and for flow processes.
In this book, problems are solved using three popular software, viz. “Mathcad”, “Engineering Equation Solver (EES)” and “The Expert System on Thermodynamics (TEST)”. Some ‘free software’ are also explained.
An introductory chapter in Part-I gives a brief overview of the software used.
At the beginning of each chapter, a concise compilation of statements, definitions and formulas used in that chapter is given.
Comments are included generously in the codes so that the logic behind the solutions is clear.
