English Syllabus

The present document is a syllabus of the English language for students of the first year of the speciality coastal management and shoreline development. It aims to help the students acquire new vocabulary and learn terms and expressions related to marine life and the coastal zone that will help them in their future careers as oceanographers. The lessons are chosen according to what the students learn in the other subjects to help them find the equivalent words or expressions of some of what they do with the other teachers. This will enhance their ability to understand scientific articles, enable them to read and discover the innovations in their field of study, encourage them to do research, and prepare them to face the challenges of the real world and work, as the English language is a necessary tool to communicate and cooperate with scientists and institutions from different parts of the world. We tried to select topics that revolve around the coastal zone, the shoreline environment, and the coastal habitats. The phenomena that occur in this unique setting between land and water, such as the forces of waves and storms and their impact on the coast and human intervention to protect the coastal zone from erosion, include the technical vocabulary used in this field. We tried also to shed light on the phenomenon of water pollution and discuss some of the solutions to tackle this problem, such as sewage treatment facilities. Rising sea level is also another phenomenon that has an impact on shaping coastal landscapes, so we discussed the different causes of this natural phenomenon and its impact on the coastal zone. 3 In addition to other topics that we have judged to be helpful to students of this speciality.
