This work is the result of research extending over a period
of fifteen years, on the forms and structures of the
teleostean brains, each specimen of which being procured
from fish native to the inland waters of Japan or to the seas surrounding it. Examples of one hundred and
two of these species are listed in this Atlas. The purpose of this Atlas is twofold: first, to present a
study of comparative neurology, and second, to provide as a reference work of value to the fishing industry and to expedite the progress of fish culture.
The study of the fish brain, the main characteristics of which are common to all vertebrates, is of special interest to researchers in the evolution of the vertebrate nervous system. .In the past, a number of world-famous neurologists and psychiatrists, among whom were G. Fritsch, L. Edinger, Ramon y Cajal, C. L. Herrick, van Gehuchten, C. J. Herrick,Ariens Kappers, K. Goldstein and others, studied the brains
of fish very closely, in order to further their knowledge of the brain function of higher animals, since the fundamental Ramon y Cajal, C. L. Herrick, van Gehuchten, C. J. Herrick, Ariens Kappers, K. Goldstein and others, studied the brains of fish very closely, in order to further their knowledge of
the brain function of higher animals, since the fundamental structure of the vertebrate nervous system can be perceived in the teleostean brain., as a joint work financing its publication was supplied by [ studying the brain structure without actual visual inspection of their living conditions.
A large number of fish species, native to Japan, have yet tobe studied and a thorough investigation of their behavior and habitat is necessary to improve the methods of fish A culture.
