Abstract
The present study focused on the valorization of the co-products of the most abundant shrimp
in Algeria, which is Aristeus antennatus, the extraction of chitosan, and the treatment of water
contaminated by Legionella pneumophila using this biopolymer in powder and beads alone or
associated with solar UV. Photolysis alone was also used to compare between the different
methods.
The overall biochemical analysis of the composition of shrimp co-products showed that the
shrimp exoskeleton contains a considerable amount of minerals, proteins, lipids, and other
compounds such as polysaccharides. The extraction of chitosan was very efficient with a very
high production mass yield and degree of deacetylation. The chitosan produced is of good
quality, soluble in slightly acidic water with a DDA of 94.4%.
The efficacy of eliminating L. pneumophila by chitosan treatment or/and by solar UV
irradiation was studied by performing series of experiments including the different treatment
methods; all of them provided very good results with high abatement, especially the one of
chitosan treatment combined with photolysis and the one of photolysis alone.
