History, ecology, and music are part of the freight carried by the sloop Clearwater,
a replica of the sloops that used to ply the Hudson in the days when its waters were
clear. Hudson River Sloop Restoration, Inc., intends to keep sailing until those w°ters are clear again and is bringing that day closer with an imaginatwe combination
of information about river pollution that includes analysis of water samples, action
against polluters, and education of the people in riverside communities. The Clearwater, all wrapped up with sails and songs (the latter from folk singer Pete Seegër

and other lesser—known but equally dedicated musicians), has carried its message 'f°
Long Island and Connecticut, and has inspired people in Chesapeake Bay, the Great
Lakes, and San Francisco to plan the construction of crafts similarly linked to the
past and the future of their own waterways.
