Description :
Water pollution is obvious enough to all of us. The immediate cause seems apparent no farther away than the discharge pipes of the nearest industrial or sewage treatment plant. The underlying reasons for the continued use of these pipes have resisted definition, however. In this book we explain that the use of discharge pipes, first a matter of convenience eventually generated a technological rationale that has now achieved formal status. Our belief is that lasting solutions to water pollution require a reassessment of this rationale, particularly because many current conventional water pollution control and water use concepts are derived from nineteenth century practices. Water Pollution is designed to help in this reassessment process, which should occur at the college, graduate, and professional levels of education where the rationale receives attention.
The scientific subjects discussed do not require students to have any previous background. The social problems associated with the many facets of water pollution are related to scientific and technological aspects, thus enabling students to identify the links between the social and the scientific issues inherent in pollution issues that must be resolved if the situation is to be improved. Many of the issues closely parallel those raised by Virginia Brodine in Air Pollution, a companion book in this series.
We are grateful to the many persons who have helped us. This book would not have been possible without the continuous assistance of Virginia Brodine, who first helped us organize and develop the manuscript and then oversaw the organizational details to be coordinated in such a project. Virginia did a good deal of rewriting and much of the final editing; she also took on the intricate task of selecting illustrations. Those of us who worked on Water Pollution express our deep appreciation for her efforts.
