Chapter 3 Getting Your Data to Match the Map
Chapter Wrapup
Proper georeferencing of data is a key element of working with geospatial
technology and allows for all types of maps and imagery to work side by side
with other forms of geospatial data. As noted in Hands-on Application 3.3:
Microsoft Map Cruncher Gallery, this chapter’s lab will have you apply all of
this chapter’s concepts using the MapCruncher program—you’ll start with an
unreferenced campus map, and by the end, it should be properly aligned with
a real-world dataset.
In the next chapter, we’ll be looking at the Global Positioning System, an
extremely useful (and freely available) system for determining your position
on Earth’s surface and providing you with a set of coordinates, so you can find
where you are.
Important note: The references for this chapter are part of the online companion for this book and can be found at http://www.whfreeman.com/

In this chapter’s lab, you’ll be using a free software
tool called MapCruncher that enables you to georeference your own images using Microsoft’s Bing
Maps as the source. There are several examples of
MapCruncher’s uses online. Open your Web browser
and go to http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/um/
redmond/projects/mapcruncher/Gallery to view
some examples (including bike maps, campus maps,
and park maps). Examine the georeferenced maps
in the gallery, then locate and download some maps
of places in your local area (such as parks, festivals,
fairgrounds, tourist areas, or historical sites) in a format to use with MapCruncher. Once you go through
the steps in this chapter’s lab, you’ll have an inventory of local maps on hand that you can apply your
georeferencing skills to.

While you’ll use the free MapCruncher to align unreferenced data in the lab, georeferencing tools are
common in other GIS software such as ArcGIS (which
we’ll discuss further in Chapter 5). In order to demonstrate georeferencing in ArcGIS, its company has
a video of how the steps are performed at http://
webhelp.esri.com/arcgisdesktop/9.3/index.cfm?
TopicName=Georeferencing_video_sample. Check
out the video and see how GIS tools are used for
georeferencing a dataset.
