What Other Kinds of Data and Software Are
Available Online?
The previous chapters have described numerous datasets and how to obtain
them (either for free or for minimal cost), often through the applications in
the chapters. To build a database of available geospatial data, you could get
your hands on:
a 3D models for Google Earth – see Chapter 14
a Digital Line Graphs (DLGs) – see Chapter 5
a Digital Raster Graphics (DRGs) – see Chapter 13
a Geocaches or other GPS destination locations – see Chapter 4
a Landsat imagery (current or historic) – see Chapter 11
a MODIS images – see Chapter 12
a NAPP aerial photos or orthophotos– see Chapter 9
a National Elevation Data (NED) and DEMs – see Chapter 13
a National Land Cover Database (NLCD) – see Chapter 5
a TIGER/Line files – see Chapter 8
a US Topo maps – see Chapter 13
Beyond these options, there are plenty of other online resources available
for obtaining geospatial data, and usually for free. State, county, or municipal
Web services will often make their GIS data or remotely sensed imagery available free of charge (as you saw in Chapter 5). Other Web resources used in
An online utility is available for examining the

technical colleges involved with geospatial education.
Schools are mapped by categories—whether they
offer a degree in an aspect of geospatial technology,
a certificate program, or have classes available. Check
your local area for what nearby schools (select the
option for CC Info on GIS Offerings in the cube menu
icon to get the names of the schools) are involved
with teaching geospatial courses and what kinds of
degree programs they offer.
