Earth Observing System Imagery
3. Select all six of the phenomena that are being monitored using MODIS.
4. Select 1 km for the resolution to examine.
5. Use Entire Group for the Display Mode.
6. Change the date ranges to those shown here (January 1, 2006, to
December 1, 2010).
7. A number of graphics corresponding to one of the six phenomena being
monitored by MODIS imagery will appear on the globe.
8. Zoom in to California, where there is a cluster of the “fire” symbols.
Double-click on the fire icon and a MODIS image will appear overlaid
onto the globe. Examine several of the images related to California fires.
Question 12.1 How are the fires being shown in this MODIS imagery?
Question 12.2 How is the extent of the fires being tracked via MODIS?
(Hint: What else is visible in the MODIS scene aside from the fires
themselves?)
9. Rotate the view around to Western Europe, particularly off the west
coast of Portugal. Click on the green “other” icon whose label indicates
a “phytoplankton bloom.” A new MODIS scene will appear. Also,
examine some of the other “phytoplankton” images off the coasts of
other European countries, such as France or Denmark.
Question 12.3 According to the caption, this is a MODIS image of
phytoplankton in the ocean. Why would this be a phenomenon that is
important enough to be tracked by MODIS, and what does the imagery show
an observer about this phenomenon?
2. The Rapid Fire Modis dialog box will appear.
