ecosystems of Saronikos Gulf are more manageable after
the operation of the sewage treatment plant on the Psittalia
Island. In the inner Saronikos Gulf the main nutrient load
was presumed to be owing to the sewage effluents. Significant temporal variation of nutrient concentrations showed
decreasing trends for nitrate and SRP concentrations, which
have revealed an increase in the soluble N:P ratio near
the Psittalia sewage treatment plant (Pavlidou et al. 2005;
Pavlidou et al. 2008). The operation of the secondary treatment plant since 2004 has affected the ecological statusof
the inner Saronikos Gulf.
