The agreement between the modeled and measured component absorption spectra is quite
good. Especially gratifying is the fact that the measured spectra are derived from analysis of
individual particles while the modeled spectra are based upon a bulk analysis model of
component absorption. Thus, the gap between individual and bulk analysis can be bridged
with relatively small errors.
Many questions can be raised regarding future priorities for assessing the basic determinations
of spectral absorption by cells and detrital components in the ocean. Besides new technology
and data processing to come in the future, an interactive communication between researchers
will certainly prove to be highly productive. Emphasis should be placed on reinforcing
theoretical and experimental studies concerning the optics of single cells including the smallest
ones to take a full advantage of the capabilities offered by, or to be developed for, cytometric
instrumentation.
It seems timely to envisage the constitution of an optical data bank. High quality absorption
spectra gathered in various provinces of the world ocean could form one part of such a bank.
A catalog of optical signatures (absorption, scattering, fluorescence and possibly
backscattering) of the common species, grown in culture under various conditions, could form
the other part. An example of such a contribution is given in Bricaud et al. (1988). The
optical catalog should be associated with a catalog of the identified (HPLC) pigments which
is now under development for taxonomic applications.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
We thank the members, in particular Clarice Yentsch, of the Organizing Committee of the NATO Advanced
Study Institute for encouraging the open session on the optical properties of marine particulates. We also express
our gratitude to all participants of this discussion for their contribution.
