abundant in this area. A fourth subregion
was identified in the area beyond the Segunda
Angostura, influenced by coastal Atlantic
waters and exposed to a strong macrotidal
regime. In this area, cell concentrations
dropped to values below 10 6 cells/I, and
coccolithophorids and flagellates replaced
small coccoid cells in abundance. These
results indicate that in the late summer of
1991, the Straits of Magellan, from the
Pacific entrance to the Segunda Angostura,
