Chapter 29
VGT-S products: They are most probably the data sets which will be
frequently used operationally: they correspond to VGT-P data to which
corrections have been applied using the annotations and for which some
syntheses are provided:
a daily synthesis using all available measurements on one day for a
specific location,
a 10-day synthesis, based on the selection of the “best” measurement
of the entire period. The selection is based on the maximum NDVI
value, as it is commonly accepted today, even if many problems
associated to that selection are identified.
To adapt to the evolution of users needs as well as to the validation of
new algorithms, a procedure to regularly update the processing system is
requested: it should provide capabilities to include new methods for data
correction, synthesis, etc, as soon as they are commonly accepted by the user
community.
Support to users is provided to facilitate the use of VEGETATION data:
a catalogue with browsing capability on the data quality (cloudiness) is
accessible through Internet. Validated software templates for the common
operations for data handling and standard correction will be made widely
available.
3.3
The distribution component
The design of the entire system was adapted to provide measurements
which are mostly fitted to thematic developments: it was considered that,
either for scientific studies or application projects, the lack of operational
sets of data, with the insurance that they would be available in a long term
was a blocking factor. While numerous scientific or experimental satellites
do exist for a long time for the benefit of physicists, none of them is
providing data sets adapted to the use in either scientific development on the
study of the biosphere at different scales or application projects where
continuous provision of basic and robust information is essential. For these
reasons, the distribution of VEGETATION products is being done through
the existing network which is providing the SPOT high resolution images,
on a ‘commercial-like’ basis. Innovative solutions for distribution through
modern ways (e.g., Internet on line catalog on World Wide Web, access to
data through electronic transmission) have been implemented to facilitate the
contact with users and limit the delay between acquisition and product
delivery to about 2 days.
