LAND SURFACE PROCESSES AND MODEL
VARIABLES
To derive observational requirements from the conceptual schematization
of processes and interactions, the latter have to be linked with observations
of spectral radiances. It should be noted that linking model with radiometric
variables implies the availability of algorithms. In some cases such as with
inverse modeling of directional radiances this link is based on the expected
developments of algorithms described by recent literature and the studies
carried out to define specific aspects of the Land Surface Processes and
Interactions Mission.
First, more specific categories of land surface processes have to be
identified. The LSPIM will focus on the following land surface processes:
Heat and momentum exchange at the land-atmosphere interface;
radiation balance; turbulent heat transfer; control of heterogeneous land
surfaces on processes in the atmospheric boundary layer;
Regional processes of photosynthesis, including regulation of canopy
conductance through environmental factors (water stress, temperature);
Regional hydrological processes including evapotranspiration, run-off
generation, ground water recharge, soil water flow, lateral water and
pollutant transports, infiltration, generation of floods and droughts,
accumulation and melt of snow and ice, erosion and sedimentation.
Biogeochemical processes which control the cycle of carbon and
nitrogen through the water cycle; biogeochemicals solution and transport
in surface and ground-water; soil organic matter turnover; waterborne
diseases;
Ecosystem processes determining structure and functioning of
ecosystems, including biodiversity, succession dynamics of plant
associations; interrelation of vegetation patches; soil development,
erosion and degradation. The LSPIM will focus on the determination of
