FIRST RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
Figure 1 presents three sample clusters consisting of 2, 10, and 50
Gaussian sample spheres generated assuming
and
and
making use of the modified Gaussian correlation function in Eqs. (13) and
(14) with cutoff degree
in Eq. (9).
When generating the clusters, the hard-sphere radius
was set at
so some of the member particles may not be in contact with the
others. For the purposes of the present preliminary study of light scattering
by clusters of Gaussian spheres, this simple algorithm of cluster generation
was found satisfactory. It is to be expected that more precise cluster
generation algorithms will not change the preliminary conclusions of the
present study.
Figure 2 shows the geometric optics parts of the scattering phase matrices
for 2-particle, 10-particle, and 50-particle clusters assuming a refractive
index of 1.55 for member particles. Up to
ray chords (van de Hulst
1957) and
rays and sample clusters were included in ray tracing, and the
relative cutoff flux was set at
