parameter intervening in the cost function. Since this algorithm permits to
characterize land surface properties on the basis of the radiative properties
controlling the radiation transfer regime, it is also possible to estimate, for all
selected solutions, other geophysical variable of interest such the Fraction of
Absorbed Photosynthetically Active Radiation and the spectral albedo.

CONCLUSIONS
This short paper outlines a new methodology to access information
related to land cover from remote sensing data and shows the feasibility of
this approach by exhibiting preliminary results. It aims at demonstrating the
potential of simulation and inversion techniques based on the application of
radiation transfer models used as interpretation tools. This approach has been
applied to a pre-processed AVHRR global data set accumulating multiangular data over a short period of time as if they had been acquired
simultaneously. The proposed methodology is easy to implement, does not
depend on any particular sensor or radiation transfer model and appears to be
quite robust for operational applications. This type of algorithm will likely
become more popular when analyzing high quality data such as will be
provided by the next generation of sensors and in particular by the MISR
instrument on the NASA EOS platform.
