Since the early 1970s, a large number of spaceborne multispectral sensors
have been launched. In Earth observing programs, key sensors have been
those on board the LANDSAT, SPOT and Indian Remote Sensing (IRS) series
of satellites. From the early 1970s through to the early 1990s, the LANDSAT
(1-3) MSS provided global observations at 80 m spatial resolution, although
only in four broad wavelength regions; two in the visible (green and red)
