4. Scaling Up Coral Reef Metabolism Using Remote Sensing: A Case Study
We estimated net calcification (G) and excess production (E) for a representative
study area on the carbonate platform of the northern Florida reef tract by integrating
benthic chamber respirometry with habitat mapping based on aircraft hyperspectral
imaging. The study area is located approximately 5 km east of Caesar’s Creek and
Elliot Key, on the carbonate platform seaward of Hawk Channel in the northern Florida
reef tract within Biscayne National Park (Figure 2) (Ginsburg and Shinn, 1993). This
study area consists of a lagoonal platform that lies landward of Ajax Reef, a shelf edge
bank reef, and is covered by carbonate sand, mostly capped by a Thallasia testudinum
seagrass meadow, and contains numerous scattered patch reefs surrounded by bare
sandy halos (McPherson and Halley, 1996; Shinn et al., 1989).
