Anaerobic Wastewater Treatment
The start-up normally takes place in 2 phases:
1.
Seeding, recycling of water in the plant approx. one week without any influent
wastewater.
2.
Step-by-step increasing load, normally starting with approx. 10 per cent of the
maximum load. When the content of the volatile fatty acid in the effluent is
sufficiently low (200-400 g/m 3 , calculated as HAc), the load is increased by
50-100 per cent.
Fig 9.13 shows an example of the start-up of an anaerobic plant.

The operation of an anaerobic plant should be observed by means of a number of
measurements. Which and how many measurements to be applied for a given plant
should be subject to an evaluation of the plant and the environmental conditions it
is subjected to. As shown in Table 9.10, the measurements can be divided into
measurements used for process monitoring and process control, as well as functional control.
The process control parameters give notice of problems ahead and may therefore be
used to initiate measures to prevent operational problems from occurring. For
example, the result of an increasing content of volatile acids may be that the organic
load must be reduced, or that in more serious cases, base must be added to the tank
to maintain the pH value at a sufficiently high level.
