Plant types, biological phosphorus removal
8.2.2 Biological phosphorus removal with
nitrification-denitrification and an external
carbon source
If an insufficient amount of easily degradable organic matter is present in the raw
wastewater, an external carbon source can be applied which may be acetate or
industrial wastewater/waste products from the food processing industry. Fig 8.4
shows the schematic representation of the plant layout.

External
org. matter
Biological phosphoms removal with external input of organic matter.
Biological phosphonts removal (P) with internally produced easily degradable o rganic
matter (by hydrolysis (H)).
D + N are denitrification and nitrification,
S is sedimentation.
