comprises c 50.77 % of the total inhabitants
around Rudrasagar, but most of them ( c 78.75 %)
lead a life below poverty line.
Tourism
Rudrasagar, being one of the famous tourist spots
in Tripura, has high socio-economic importance:
the main attraction being the summer resort in the
middle of the lake named ‘Nirmahal’ or palace in
the water, which was built by Bir Bikram Kishore
(1927–1947), the late Maharaja of Tripura. Every
year, ‘Nirmahal’ gets a festive look with about
50,000 tourists visiting it. This is still preserved
as a heritage site by the Govt. of Tripura.
Management, Conservation
In view of dereliction of this wetland, various
agencies have, perhaps, been working towards scientifi c cultivation, soil stabilisation and afforestation of the catchment areas. Further, a Management
Action Plan (MAP) prepared by the WI had been
submitted to MOEF, GOI for funding in order to
implement a development programme as well as
conservational measures. Further, considering its
ecological and socio- economic importance in the
state, Rudrasagar wetland had been designated as
a Ramsar site in 2005.
20.2.11.2 Kurti Beel
Kurti Beel (Plate 20.55 ) lies between 92° 15′ E
and 24° 45′ N, at a distance of 30 km away from
Dharmanagar town in North Tripura District and
about 110 km from Silchar City. The Beel has a
maximum length, breadth and depth of 0.6 km,
0.3 km and 2.8 m, respectively, at FSL.
Kurtichhara is the main inlet of the Beel, while
Kalanadi drains into the Thal River as the major
outlet. The Beel also receives water from the surrounding catchment and domestic sewage
through a number of small drains. The Beel has a
water spread area of 93.69 ha (approx.) at FSL.
