3.1.2 Major rivers and Lake Constance in Germany
Systematic studies have shown that most of the major rivers in Germany were heavily
polluted by heavy metals - Rhine, Neckar, Main, Weser, and Elbe (F6rstner and
Miiller 1973). In spite of large improvement since 1970, there is significant
enrichment in the sediments, especially in 'old' sediment layers.
