The map in Fig. 2 and the hydrogeological cross-section in Fig. 3 schematically
characterise the current system, which includes the surface waterbodies of the
River Danube, the flood bypass channel Neue Donau, which was built in the
1970s, and the Alte Donau. These three surface waterbodies interact intensively
via the aquifer between them.
