Water Sources and Quality Along the Lower Jordan River
145
Table 2 shows the mass balance calculations of major chemical constituents
between Neve Ur and Hamadia. The chemical composition of the unknown input
can now be estimated. A comparison between the unknown composition and the
chemistry of the river shows that the unknown contains low chloride and high
sulfate concentrations. Due to the significant variations along the river, sulfate
serves as an excellent tracer. Figure 12 showed the concentration of sulfate versus
the concentration of chloride of river samples representing all the sampling trips.
The linear relationships and the good agreement with the Alumot-Yarmouk
mixing curve had led to the conclusion that the unknown composition is similar to
that of the Yarmouk water. Using the results presented in Table 2, we are in a
position to better characterize the chemistry of the unknown contribution. The
interpretation of the analysis is shown in Fig. 17. Water samples were taken from
possible sources that affected the Lower Jordan River, 911999 - 2/2001. These
samples include the western and eastern flows, drainage pipes, drainage canals,
fish ponds, sewage, and groundwater. Fig. 17 shows that the unknown chemistry
represents a mixture of water from a variety of sources. It seems that the unknown
in the Neve-Ur Hamadia section is affected by the higher salinity western flows. It
is possible that when the influence of the western inflows is reduced, the unknown
salinity is even lower.
